How to add marks to a PDF
- Select your PDF file.
- Pick a tool — pen, text or highlight — and mark up the page.
- Move between pages as needed, then save the annotated PDF.
When you'd use this
- Filling in a flat form — Typing into a PDF form that has no fillable fields built in.
- Marking up a draft — Circling a paragraph or writing a note for a colleague to see.
- Highlighting — Drawing attention to a clause or a figure before sending the file on.
- Small corrections — Covering a wrong date with a box and typing the right one above it.
Good to know
- Three tools — A pen for freehand marks, a text tool for typing, and a rectangle for highlighting or covering.
- It draws over, it does not rewrite — The PDF's existing text cannot be edited in place. No browser tool does this reliably, and one that claimed to would be overpromising.
- Covering is not redacting — A box drawn over sensitive text hides it visually, but the original text is still in the file and can be selected and copied. Never rely on it to conceal confidential information.
- Marks are permanent once saved — They are drawn into the page when you export, so keep the original if you might want a clean copy later.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit the existing text in my PDF?
No — this adds new marks on top of the page (drawings, highlights, typed notes). Changing text that's already part of the PDF isn't something a browser-based tool can reliably do.
Can I undo a mistake?
Yes — Undo removes your last mark on the current page, and Clear page removes everything on it.
Can I change the text that is already in my PDF?
No. This tool adds a layer on top and does not rewrite existing text. If you need to change the words themselves, convert with PDF to Word, edit the document there, and convert it back.
Is a black box over text a safe way to redact it?
No, and this is worth being blunt about: the text underneath remains in the file and can be copied straight out. To genuinely remove information, delete the whole page or fix the document at its source.
Do my annotations stay editable afterwards?
No. Once the edited PDF is saved, the marks become part of the pages and cannot be moved or deleted.
