The percentage is applied to the amount you type. If your bill already includes tax or a service charge, the tip is calculated on that figure too — enter the pre-tax amount if you would rather tip on that. Rounding up adds the difference to the tip, not to the bill. Tipping customs vary by country, so the presets are common percentages rather than a recommendation. Amounts work in any currency.
How to calculate a tip

When you'd use this
- Splitting a restaurant bill — Work out one figure everybody pays instead of doing the division at the table.
- Tipping a set percentage — Apply the same percentage every time without redoing the arithmetic in your head.
- Paying in cash — Round each share up to a whole unit so nobody has to hunt for coins.
- Checking a suggested tip — Compare the amounts a receipt suggests against the percentage you actually intended to leave.
Good to know
- It tips on the number you type — The percentage is applied to whatever amount you enter. If your bill already includes tax or a service charge, the tip is calculated on that total too — enter the pre-tax amount if you would rather tip on that.
- Rounding raises the tip slightly — Rounding a share up to a whole unit adds the difference to the tip, never to the bill. The result shows how much rounding added so you can see the effect.
- Tipping customs are local — The presets are common percentages, not a recommendation. In many countries a service charge is already added, or tipping is not expected at all.
- It works in any currency — This is plain arithmetic with no currency attached, so the figures come back in whatever units you entered. Rounding up means rounding to the next whole unit of that currency.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Both are common practice and the tool does not decide for you. It calculates the percentage on whatever figure you type, so enter the pre-tax subtotal if you prefer to tip on that.
How does the rounding option work?
It rounds each person's share up to the next whole unit, then works backwards to the group total. The extra goes entirely into the tip, and the result line tells you how much was added.
What if a service charge is already on the bill?
Then a percentage on top is often unnecessary. If you still want to add something, enter the bill without the service charge, or type a smaller custom percentage.
Can it split the bill unevenly?
No. It divides the total equally by the number of people you enter, which covers the usual case. Uneven splits, where people ordered very differently, need to be worked out separately.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser with plain JavaScript, and nothing is uploaded, stored or shared. Closing the tab clears everything you entered.
